DESMOND TUTU — A GOD OF SURPRISES

(photo: Tom Gennara)
"There's no question about the reality of evil, of injustice, of suffering, but at the center of this existence is a heart beating with love."

South African Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on how his understanding of God and humanity has unfolded through the history he's lived and shaped.

Listen to Krista Tippett talk with Desmond Tutu about life, humanity and how history changed his life.

Krista is an inspiration to the work I do, in sharing the uplifting and courageous stories of the people that influence me.

Krista Tippett
Host/Executive Producer
Krista grew up in Oklahoma, the granddaughter of a Southern Baptist preacher. She studied history at Brown University and went to Bonn, West Germany in 1983 on a Fulbright Scholarship to study politics in Cold War Europe. In her 20s, she ended up in divided Berlin for most of the 1980s, first as The New York Times stringer and a freelance correspondent for NewsweekThe International Herald Tribune, the BBC, and Die Zeit. She later became a special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to West Germany.
Krista left Berlin in 1988, the year before the Wall fell. She lived in Spain, England, and Scotland for a time, then pursued a M.Div. from Yale. When she graduated in 1994, she saw a black hole where intelligent coverage of religion should be. As she conducted a far-flung oral history project for theBenedictines of St. John's Abbey (pdf)in Collegeville, Minnesota, she began to imagine radio conversations about the spiritual and intellectual content of faith that could open imaginations and enrich public life.
In 2007, Krista published her first book, Speaking of Faith. It is a memoir of religion in our time, including her move from geopolitical engagement to theology and the cumulative wisdom of her interviews these past years. Her book, Einstein's God, illustrates some of the important ways the program and her vision have continued to evolve.
Krista's two children are at the center of her life. She also loves cooking for her children and their friends, radio plays, beautiful writing, great science fiction, cross country skiing, and hot yoga.

Through the eye of the storm, or around it?

Go around or go through? {Click to see larger view}
I made this today, whilst thinking about all the people in my life who have suffered and who are suffering great challenges. Be it cancer, death, abuse and the myriad of other spirit crushing challenges that land on top of us like a giant tornado crushing our home.

It is easy to say, but much harder to do. Great strength and courage must be summoned to walk through the eye of the storm. The people that end up walking through it often come out the other side, stronger, prouder, more determined.

Sadly,  not everyone is able to make it through, and for those that don't we live in hope that the net of community and friendship can catch them.

Letters to a Nichiren Buddhist.

"Great spirit crushing obstacles, they are inevitable. How we choose to move through or around them, that is our challenge, that is what defines us. "

Follow the path of a poison that runs deeply through our entire society. #nobystanders

Abuse ruins people’s lives. We all have a responsibility to take a stand and put a stop to it. By making sure that bullying is reported and prejudice is challenged, we can help ensure that every person in Britain lives free from fear of persecution and violence.”

This is the story of one incredible doctor, what happened to him will astound you.

TODAY: A Short Documentary Film from Phillip Montgomery on Vimeo.

TODAY is the incredible moving story of Dr. Pankaj Parekh, the Director of Water Quality for the LADWP, in charge of the clean drinking water of over four-million people. After suffering a tragic accident, he is faced with new, unthinkably difficult challenges, but with the unconditional love and support of his wife, he fights on.

Forgiveness

A man strives to grant forgiveness after a devastating loss.

The only way to fight hatred is with love. You can not banish the darkness of hatred with more hate. The world is full of hate, the world is full of love. Like light and dark these opposing forces cancel each other out.

Darkness is merely an absence of light, just like hate is merely an absence of love.

The hatred that lives in the hearts of men and women can not exist when drowned out by love.

The people that oppress us, silence us and shut us down, must be sent love, not hate for if we allow hatred in our hearts we can become the ones we hate, with ease.

Hatred is like a poison that destroys and obliterates your humanity, it smothers millions of years of progress of our consciousness, it is the darkness within us.

Hatred is easy, it is a lower path, we can fall in to this like a leaf falling from a tree into the cool river below. But to love those who persecute us can be likened to an ant lifting Mount Fuji on its back.

Love and Compassion are our biggest weapons in our daily struggle against hatred.

Savour the life you live...

Isn't life so strange? Just when you think things are fine a curve ball comes and whacks you across the head.

A young man in my district is dealing with some very difficult health issues in his family, his little daughter has been struck down by a condition. She may not be able to talk or walk for a while.

It has made me realise and think about my own life and the life of all my family and friends and all of those who are held down by illness.

We are here for such a short time, and in that time anything can happen. It is vital that we form a strong faith and build a solid platform of community around us, so that when the winds of karma come crashing down upon us we bend, but we do not break.
