The End of the World as We Know It....

How was it for you?
21 December 2012

Today is a day like any other day. Yesterday and today were the same. A gift. A privilege. Each day that we exist on this earth is a miracle. The fact that this tiny little speck of a planet has survived this long, in this corner of our ever changing galaxy is a wonder all on its own.

Where as I don't particularly subscribe to the date related focus on change, I do believe that if enough people try to align them selves with a new way of being, a paradigm shift will occur.

The work for Professor Sheldrake points to the idea of a morphic field, which acts like a connecting mechanism to our combined collective consciousness, the creative physical design storehouse of our species.

If enough of us awaken to a life of non-vioelence and compassion for others, the world will shift and things will change.

But this is more a self fulfilling prophecy then a galactic alignment.

Planets and stars align all the time, in-fact in 1998 we aligned with the center of the milky way and nothing major happened.

Change is defiantly coming, but this is down to the desire for change, not the numbers on a calendar created in the 1584.

There is magic in the air, there always has been, but we create it with our minds and our thoughts, the magic of change and shift comes from within us, not from outside of us.

We are the change, we seek.

Every person from every religion should watch this film. EPIC!

A pre-eminent voice for liberal Christianity, John Shelby Spong was the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark for 24 years before his retirement in 2000. His admirers acclaim his making contemporary theology accessible to the ordinary lay person—he's considered a champion of an inclusive faith by many both inside and outside the Christian church. His challenges to the church have also made him a target of hostility, fear, and death threats. Calling himself "a joyful, passionate, convinced believer in the reality of God," he seeks not to create a new religion, but to reform the church he loves. Series: "Burke Lectureship on Religion & Society" [1/2005] [Humanities] [Show ID: 9117]

Life is beautifully simple.

Life is a balance.

Life is beautifully simple. The eb and flow of the forces of nature seem out of our control. However each of us has the power to be a part of it, without being separate from it.

Human life, and all that we create is a part of nature, though right now we have become a force of nature. Uncontrollable.

Do not concern your self with dogma, it will only weigh you down, over complicate your practice and your life.

Focus EVERYTHING on your actions, thoughts and words. With EVERYT
HING you do, speak and think you are CREATING KARMA.

Every tiny deed, every thought you are creating.

Focus your life, and your practice on doing good and becoming a better person.

I feel so frustrated sometimes as how deeply simple this concept is, many people refuse to accept it.

Why? How? How can life be so simple? How can happiness be so simple? Surely I must suffer greatly? Surely I must have to dance around in circle, swing a chicken above my head, turn fifteen times with the sunset, surely then I will become happy....??

No you will not.

You will find happiness when you wake up and realise that YOUR LIFE is your own that you have to stop blaming others, and trying to control others in a way to deflect the attention away from your own problems and darkness.

Look in the mirror (The Gohonzon) and polish your own life, till it shines brightly before you try to polish the life of others.

Jesus said "He who is without sin should cast the first stone..." something that always sticks with me through out my life.

We should never ever ever judge others, unless our lives gleam with perfection.

Something we all know is not possible.

Be human, be imperfect. Just be your self.

Practicing Buddism is no walk in the park

Life is no walk in the park.

Using your Buddhist practice to find happiness is not a walk in the park.

Confronting your fears and facing those inner doubts has to be the hardest thing any one can do.

In Nichiren Buddhism, we call it doing your "Human Revolution"

What I love about my Buddhist practice, or at least, MY, interpertation of it, is that, THE WORK, that has to be done is down to me.

If I really want those changes, if I really want to find that happiness I must seek it, find it, collect it.

The happiness most people seek seems illusive, it seems like a destination that you arrive at after a lot of hard work.

But I do not agree.

The kind of solid happiness most of us seek comes from a solid foundation of self. To be in a place in your life where you feel so secure and strong that nothing can shake you.

This to me is happiness. Life without fear.

Growing up a very insecure and fearful person, I found my self feeling deeply unhappy, lost, empty and alone through out my twenties, there are many reasons for this.

After I began to understand the SIMPLE principles of a Buddhist practice, I realised that the constant; "I need to do this, I should do that, it would be great if I could find a book or a course that could help me feel better about my self"

I was looking for something outside of my self to fix, what I thought were missing parts.

What I have come to realise is that the missing part is my opinions or beliefs about who or what I am, and what I am capable of.

We are all imperfect, and when we realise that its OK to be imperfect, we can relax and enjoy the little time we have on this planet.

I realised today just how many demands I make on my self on a daily basis;

At all times, I must be funny, I must be thin, I must be interesting, I must be tall, I must be creative, I must I must I must....

All these demands, daily... most of the time I wear my self out.... this leads to anxiety which makes life rather tedious sometimes.

We can only look in the mirror and begin to see the imperfection and realise that that is who we are...all we are right now is a collection of all our positive and negative qualities.

The sooner we can let go and have FAITH in our selves as people and our lives, we can become happy.

When I use the word FAITH, that FAITH is me. That FAITH that I am building and developing, is in MYSELF and my potential as human being.

Not something external, a person or a thing. But the deep and solid FAITH that no matter what life throws at me, I can handle it, I will survive it.

We are such complex creatures and our minds are a rabbit warren of ideas, beliefs, perspectives and fears.

Buddhist practice for me is a tool to help you develop a strong sense of self.

We just have to see past the dogma and look deeply in to our own eyes and ask

"Who am I?" and "What do I want from this life?"

Simple questions, but nearly always difficult and elusive answers.

Each life is unique... now go live it...

Life is for living!
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open… No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.” — Martha Graham

Buddhism and Suffering

What kind of shield do you have?

Being a Buddhist does not make you immune to suffering, or destined to live a charmed life free from the troubles of mankind.

It simply means you are equipped with the tools to take a different path, it reminds you of the wisdom you posses, to help you navigate the rough seas of life.

When illness, grief or suffering overcomes us, this does not mean we have failed.

We should remind our selves that with every new life, and with every passing moment, we have another opportunity to try again and to win.

There are no failures, only growth.

Stop trying to be normal

At a certain point in your life, probably when too much of it has gone by... you will open your eyes and see yourself for who you are... especially for everything that made you so different from all the awful normals. And you will say to yourself... But I am this person. And in that statement, that correction, there will be a kind of love.

The Onenes of self and environment - Esho Funi - How being in a hell state can be reflected in your environment

Something very interesting happend a few days ago.

Whilst trapped in my hell state, I witness clear oneness of self and environment - (Esho Funi in Japanese) - I was in a restaurant and had an agressive, man sat behind me swearing and cursing at the waitress.

He was seething with anger and rage.

Shortly after we left the restaurant and walked home, just as we were about to cross the road, two cars, were sparing in the circle, the occupants screaming at each other, waving fists and shouting profanities.

I took a moment to realize just how dangerous it can be to be trapped in a hell state, how the environment around you can reflect this back to you. Causing all sorts of potential hazards. Being Buddhist I am very fortunate enough to be able to see these connections, and I took time to realize that I needed to "snap out of it"

Earlier that day I was almost run over by a large van in the city, as I was too preoccupied with being in this hell state. All sorts of things can go wrong, if our minds are clouded by anger, rage and revenge.

It's very important to work towards a higher life state where we do not allow ourselves to react with anger.

Dealing with Anger - Trapped in a hell state.

It's so hard to let go of anger sometimes.
It is so easy to sit with it, to stew in it.
To bubble and fight.

But sitting and letting go couldn't be simpler.

At this very moment I am trapped in a hell state. Every minute of my day, I am consumed by it. My connection to my true self smothered by the illusion of these emotions.

To be Buddhist does not mean, we shy away from anger and emotion, it means that we are brave enough to see our selves as we truly are. Good points and band points and realise there is something that needs to change.

Most of the time it is us that needs to change.

But  change is hard and it is painful, but I know that I am going to get through this.

If you are suffering in a hell state, or you are angry, realise that being in this state is more damaging to you, then it is to the other person.

Together we can breath in and out and let it go...

The Life Of The Buddha [Full BBC Documentary- HQ] with English/Greek/Catalan Subs

This BBC documentary covers the life of Siddhartha Gautama, a young prince from India who went out to find the reason for "Dukkha" [problems] of human life. He later found the reason of Dukkha and teached a way to live life. He was later known as the Buddha, the founder of "Buddhism".

Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal.

What matters most is love, compassion and friendship.

I am constantly bemused at how many people become so obsessed with the unimportant; in the process, missing the whole point of Buddha's teaching.

The Buddha taught love, compassion and understanding. Yet human beings constantly fight over how to practice correctly, where the Buddha was born and which school is the correct school, and which Gohonzon is the correct Gohonzon.

The principles of happiness and peace are simple.

Why must we constantly overcomplicate our lives?

Chanting for Material things

Treasures of the heart are the priceless jewel in our lives.

Can you point in a direction where I could find more information on the practice of Nichiren Buddhism? I'm new to the practice and I'm specifically trying to understand what Nichiren taught (first hand) about chanting. I've met some people in SGI that talk about chanting for "things" like financial gain, cars, jobs, girlfriends/boyfriends, etc., which I found a little shocking. Is this part of the practice?

Thanks in advance! - M

---------

Hey M, thanks for your message. SGI is a lay organisation tasked with keep the teachings of Nichiren alive.

Chanting for things (Treasures of the storehouse) is not wrong. There are many things in our lives that can support us and help us get by and aid our path to happiness.

Happy and fulfilling Relationships, money, good health etc

However, Nichiren and SGI always stress that treasures of the heart are the jewels of our lives. Friendship, love, compassion and family and these alone should be our priority over all else.

There is nothing wrong for asking for things that you want, but we are encouraged to think about, how this will lead to Kosen Rufu or world peace.

If you want a car for example, dont just ask for a car for the sake of it, think about how you could bring value to your life and the community with this car.

Its all about learning to create value. This is what Sokka Gakki means, to create value.

Older forms of Buddism have taught people to shun material things.

Nichiren Buddism says that the law of cause and effect is in your hands, you make your own choices, your life is in your own hands and you must be free to make those choices.

Noone else should tell you what you should and and shouldn't pray for. It is your life.

As you chant regularly your Buddhanature flowers and you realise what is really important in life. People, love, compassion friendship.

We are all human, we are not perfect and sometimes we want things that we think will bring us happiness; the perfect job, the perfect partner, the perfect body.

Often when we get these things, we still dont find this elusive happiness and in-fact when we loose them we feel worse.

In Buddhism we call this rapture, its a temporary happiness that does not last as it is based on external things.

SO what I am saying is that do not feel guilting for chanting for material things, just ask your self, why am I chanting for this, am I really asking for the right things to help me establish a strong and lasting happiness from within.

Does that make sense?

SGI is a group of people, SGI is what we make of it and we are all many parts of a whole rather then some pyramid shaped group.

Each one of us has the power to shape the organisation or family.

Hope that helps.

What happens when we die? Will I still be me? Where will I go?

What happens at the point of death? The question is much more easily asked than answered. Basically there is not any particular point of death in those terms, even in the case of a sudden accident. I will attempt to give you a practical answer to what you think of as this practical question, however. What the question really means to most people is this: What will happen when I am not alive in physical terms any longer? What will I feel? Will I still be myself? Will the emotions that propelled me in life continue to do so? Is there a heaven or a hell? Will I be greeted by gods or demons, enemies, or beloved ones? Most of all the question means: When I am dead, will I still be who I am now, and will I remember those who are dear to me now?

First of all, let us consider the fact just mentioned. There is no separate, indivisible, specific point of death. Life is a state of becoming, and death is a part of this process of becoming. You are alive now, a consciousness knowing itself, sparkling with cognition amid a debris of dead and dying cells; alive while the atoms and molecules of your body die and are reborn. You are alive, therefore, in the midst of small deaths; portions of your own image crumble away moment by moment and are replaced, and you scarcely give the matter a thought. So you are to some extent now alive in the midst of the death of yourself - alive despite, and yet because of, the multitudinous deaths and rebirths that occur within your body in physical terms.

Consider this analogy. For one instant your consciousness is "alive," focused in physical reality. Now for the next instant it is focused somewhere else entirely, in a different system of reality. It is unalive, or "dead" to your way of thinking. The next instant it is "alive" again, focused in your reality, but you are not aware of the intervening instant of unaliveness. Your sense of continuity therefore is built up entirely on every other pulsation of consciousness. Since your bodies and your entire physical universe are composed of atoms and molecules, then I am telling you that the entire structure exists in the same manner. It flickers off and on, in other words, and in a certain rhythm, as, say, the rhythm of breath.

There are overall rhythms, and within them an infinity of individual variations - almost like cosmic metabolism. In these terms, what you call death is simply the insertion of a longer duration of that pulsation of which you are not aware, a long pause in that other dimension, so to speak. The death, say, of physical tissue, is merely a part of the process of life as you know it in your system, a part of the process of becoming. And from those tissues, as you know, new life will spring.

Consciousness - human consciousness - is not dependent upon the tissues, and yet there is no physical matter that is not brought into being by some portion of consciousness. For example, when your individual consciousness has left the body in a way that I will shortly explain, then the simple consciousnesses of atoms and molecules remain, and are not annihilated.

As mentioned earlier, all through your lifetime, portions of that body die, and the body that you have now does not contain one particle of physical matter that "it" had, say ten years ago. Your body is completely different now, then, than it was ten years ago. The body that you had ten years ago, my dear readers, is dead. Yet obviously you do not feel that you are dead, and you are quite able to read this book with the eyes that are composed of completely new matter. The pupils, the "identical" pupils that you have now, did not exist ten years ago, and yet there seems to be no great gap in your vision.

This process, you see, continues so smoothly that you are not aware of it. The pulses mentioned earlier are so short in duration that your consciousness skips over them merrily, yet your physical perception cannot seem to bridge the gap when the longer rhythm of pulsation occurs. And so this is the time that you perceive as death. What you want to know, therefore, is what happens when your consciousness is directed away from physical reality, and when momentarily it seems to have no image to wear.

Quite practically speaking, there is no one answer, for each of you is an individual. Generally speaking, of course, there is an answer that will serve to cover main issues of this experience, but the kinds of deaths have much to do with the experience that consciousness undergoes. Also involved is the development of the consciousness itself, and its overall characteristic method of handling experience.

The ideas that you have involving the nature of reality will strongly color your experiences, for you will interpret them in the light of your beliefs, even as now you interpret daily life according to your ideas of what is possible or not possible. Your consciousness may withdraw from your body slowly or quickly, according to many variables.

In many cases of senility, for example, the strongly organized portions of personality have already left the body, and are meeting the new circumstances. The fear of death itself can cause such a psychological panic that out of a sense of self-preservation and defense you lower your consciousness so that you are in a state of coma, and you may take some time to recover.

A belief in hell fires can cause you to hallucinate Hades' conditions. A belief in a stereotyped heaven can result in a hallucination of heavenly conditions. You always form your own reality according to your ideas and expectations. This is the nature of consciousness in whatever reality it finds itself. Such hallucinations, I assure you, are temporary.

Consciousness must use its abilities. The boredom and stagnation of a stereotyped heaven will not for long content the striving consciousness. There are teachers to explain the conditions and circumstances. You are not left alone, therefore, lost in mazes of hallucination. You may or may not realize immediately that you are dead in physical terms.

You will find yourself in another form, an image that will appear physical to you to a large degree, as long as you do not try to manipulate within the physical system with it. Then the differences between it and the physical body will become obvious.

If you firmly believe that your consciousness is a product of your physical body, then you may attempt to cling to it. There is an order of personalities, an honorary guard, so to speak, who are ever ready to lend assistance and aid, however.

Now this honorary guard is made up of people in your terms both living and dead. Those who are living in your system of reality perform these activities in an "out-of-body" experience while the physical body sleeps. They are familiar with the projection of consciousness, with the sensations involved, and they help orient those who will not be returning to the physical body.

1 Million Views

WOW - 1 000 000 views on our youtube page - I am blown away.

I never stop being amazed at the power and potential of technology.

The internet really is the physical manifestation of our desire and need to be connected with one another.

Connect with people, encourage people, grow, learn and accomplish your human revolution, this is our goal.

However you do it, share this wonderful faith and share it with an open heart.

People always worry about criticism, but if anyone ever criticises you, your faith or SGI, take a bow and thank them for their opinion. Respect their point of view.

Since I started this practice 4 years ago, my life and my mind and spirit has changed.

I am working hard every day to live a life filled with hope and potential, but with despair, war and poverty all around us it is not easy to continue along this path.

I am fighting the fundamental darkness of negativity and self doubt every day.

But we are a collection of people for a reason, we all want change, we have a global responsibility.

We must all continue to work together to fight for the dignity of all life and to preserve the sanctity of all people.

We may feel separate but the bonds between us are more powerful then we realise.

Let us achieve our dream of a peaceful, poverty free world. Together.

One Love!

Nam myoho renge kyo - 1 Hour daimoku.

1 Hour of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo -

I often get requests for an MP3 of the daimoku or chanting of Nam myoho renge kyo.

Many people like to chant at least 1 hour a day. Sometimes when you are alone or you don't have anyone to practice with, its nice to have this to chant with. You don't feel so alone.

Chant abundant daimoku and awaken to the vast potential that resides deep within your life.

Awaken to your true potential.

Cause and Effect - The Power of the Gohonzon.

Cause and Effect

I have heard some buddhists talking about the physical (the ink and paper we see before us) Gohonzon as it if has some kind of magical power.  Just an observation.

I wanted to offer my perspective; In my mind the Gohonzon represents an idea, a very powerful idea of what we can become as human beings. Our ultimate potential.

Ideas are contagious and they can transform a world, a life and a destiny of an entire civilisation.

The moment we begin to externalise that power, or worship the object then we are missing the whole point of our practice.

The Gohonzon isn't a magic lantern. Its a physical representation of that magic lantern within us,  its inside of us, it is our life.

When we chant with the Gohonzon we activate that life state, and in turn bring in to the manifest, the power of the law of cause and effect.

The paper holds potential. The ink and paper are just ink and paper. The scroll transmits an idea. The idea is latent. When we read it. It becomes manifest. Like reading a book or a poem. Which all invoke feeling and emotion within us.

The Gohonzon without you, is just a piece of paper with ink on it. It has no innate power. Anyone who tells you otherwise is incorrect.

The scroll acts as a reminder of your potential.

In the simplest form it says go out there, live your life and be the best human being you can be.

No Deity.
No Devil to blame.
Just you.
Your life.
Your responsibility.

Cause and Effect. Thats it. Nothing more.

My T

(An excerpt from a book I read when I was just 17. This tells of a race of beings from a different star system. They are just like us in many ways, but much further along on the path of evolution and consciousness. We are like their distant cousins. )

The source of this information is not important. What is important is the message. So whether you believe in parallal worlds, life on other worlds or not. This is an important message for our generation.

My interpretation of this passage is a call to action for all of humanity. We have been given a unique opportunity to be here on this earth, "a priceless jewel" as it is put above, however we have misused it and forgotten our purpose.

Slowly people are becoming more aware of themselves as game masters or game changers. These are people waking up to the reality of their potential as human beings.

The time of technology and knowledge is upon us. With the ability to access information instantly, from where ever you are. This will manifest the unification of ideas and thoughts.

It wont be easy, as this new technology is a double edged sword. It has the potential to destroy us as well as free us.

The Universe exists within you....

The Microcosm and the Macrocosm are all connected.

"The whole universe exists within you And everything that is within you also exists within creation. In a single drop of water is to be found the secret of the boundless ocean. A single manifestation of yourself contains all life's manifestations." - Kahil Gibran

Forgiveness.

Louis Hay

Forgiving someone does not mean you condone their behavior. The act of forgiveness takes place in your own mind. It really has nothing to do with the other person. The reality of true forgiveness lies in setting ourselves free from holding on to the pain. It is simply an act of releasing yourself from the negative energy.

The Gohonzon

Happy Moments - Praise Gohonzon
Difficult Moments - Seek Gohonzon
Quiet Moments - Worship Gohonzon
Painful Moments - Trust Gohonzon

Every Moment - Thank Gohonzon

ANON

For The Sake of Peace.

Compassion and love are the answers to everlasting peace.

“But when all the young men refuse to kill for the sake of peace, and when all the women forbid their men to kill for the sake of peace, and when you realize that no peace will come through killing, and that the end does not justify the means, and when you grow full and light with thoughts of peace, there will be an end to war. But as long as any men go to war for the sake of peace, there will be war. And, as long as any woman teaches her sons to go to war because of love of the peace, there will be war.

You make your world. When you populate your world with ideas of peace, then peace will grow. When you think thoughts of aggression, you attract aggression and you draw it out from others in daily contact, and on the part of nations.

...Now you cannot understand this now, and yet I tell you that your own preoccupation with arms, as a country, is received by others, and your own thoughts are materialized and you create wars in your minds that then must be faced with your flesh and your blood.

The reality that you have is a replica of your thoughts. If you do not like the world, you must change your thoughts and no exterior manipulation will change the face of your experience one iota, if you do not change your dreams and your thoughts.

...Unfortunately, you equate aggression with strength, so you are afraid to elect a peaceful man. And all the other countries feel the same, so they are afraid to put into power, by whatever means, peaceful men. And so your world situation is the result of your individual beliefs, en masse.

...Now, when individually you believe in peace, and when you no longer believe that good is weak and evil is powerful, then, on countrywide bases, you will put people into power who believe in the active nature of peace. And, again, there is no other answer.”

Learning to be gracious in the face of anger.

Other peoples behaviour isn't always what it seems at first.

Learning to smile and show composure and compassion to another person that is scornful, hateful or angry is one of the hardest things we have to learn as human beings.

Always remember, just because a person is scornful or angry towards you it doesn't mean it has anything to do with you.

Many people who project their inner suffering outwards, are trapped in a hell state and suffering deeply within their own lives.

Always try to look for the Buddhahood which exists in ALL people.

Without exception.

Human Revolution and Overcoming Obstacles

Transformation is no easy feat.

Introducing Human Revolution
In today's world where global issues are so important, many people feel a sense of powerlessness and resignation; a feeling that no individual's efforts can change the way things are. But the Buddhist viewpoint is that the world should be seen from the perspective of the individual, and that the human life contains the entire universe. That is why changing our own lives one by one will bring a change in our family, our community and the society in which we live. It will change the age we live in, our history, and indeed all aspects of our world.

If we look for the true causes of war we see that it is essentially caused by the human mind. War stems from the desire to control and conquer others, to have power, and from hatred and antipathy. Such is a human being in the grip of the negative force of life. World peace starts with the inner transformation of the individual, and the struggle to elevate our state of life and free ourselves from the domination of the negative force of life. A single sunflower contains the seeds for more than a thousand new plants.

Similarly, when one brave person stands up for peace, his or her resolve spreads out into the environment in thousands of ways. Courage always brings a response. One person's human revolution can therefore eventually change the destiny of the entire human race.

The Spirit of Human Revolution
In his writing On Attaining Buddhahood, Nichiren Daishonin conveys the basic spirit of human revolution: "You must never think that any of the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Shakyamuni's lifetime or any of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are outside yourself. Your practice of the Buddhist teachings will not relieve you of the sufferings of birth and death in the least unless you perceive the true nature of your own life." [WND p3]

We could summarise the spirit of this teaching as being, "It's not up to others; nor can I blame anyone else. I have to change myself first." It is a viewpoint that says, everything in life is part of our own training; it is for our benefit and development. Human revolution takes place right now, in the situation we find ourselves at this moment.

World peace starts with this inner transformation of the individual. And yes it is a struggle to develop and elevate our state of life but human revolution is the foundation for world peace and also for individual peace and happiness. It is at the heart of our Buddhist practice. It is about changing our heart and drawing out our humanity.

It is the most amazing feeling as you discover that if the cause of your suffering is within the realms of your own life then you and only you can change that aspect of your life. This is the most freeing feeling. This is human revolution and the door to your Buddhahood.

Human revolution brings into play all the principles and processes that make up the Buddhist teachings of life. Learning to be able to live our lives on the basis of correct teachings is part of our human revolution. The process is a transformation of the heart.

Transforming the Self, Living the Teachings
When we commit our lives to chanting we embark on a journey of self-discovery and challenge. By taking responsibility for our feelings and emotions, especially those we most dislike, we come to realise we have the ability to transform our lives from within. As we broaden our experiences of chanting daimoku we get experiences of our environment reflecting the transformation of our inner lives. This could be in our family relationships, at work or in other aspects of life.

It is usually within one of these arenas that we find life can be difficult or cause us to suffer. As we continue chanting, the more we start to see our lives very differently. At first this process may seem a little uncomfortable because it is quite unique and new to us. We may or may not like what we see. Perhaps we realise we have set attitudes or opinions about others or various issues that make us suffer. It may seem that others have a problem with us. This can draw out all sorts of feelings and emotions that can make us uneasy, or uncomfortable.

Getting this kind of reaction does not mean that chanting is not working or that it is working in a negative way. On the contrary you are actually in the process of transforming exactly that which has always led you to suffer in that particular area of your life. Your chanting is illuminating an area of your life that needs to change for your own happiness. The realisation that this opinion or attitude stems from our own lives and not from other's opinions of us, leads us to uncover the Buddha nature inherent in our lives. The quickest way to transform these feelings or attitude is to keep chanting until you realise the cause of these uncomfortable feelings.

However, it may be that is exactly when you find it the most difficult time to chant. You are on the brink of changing a part of your life that always stops you from progressing or being happy. It will probably feel like walking up a hill backwards. At such times obstacles and devils arise. You will probably be able to justify why it is more beneficial to watch TV than do gongyo or chant or tell a friend about Nam-myoho-renge-kyo or study some of Nichiren Daishonin`s writings. But this is exactly the time to do these things in order to break through and win over something that has always held you back. This is the time to muster a fighting spirit and to be courageous.

In his book Seven Paths to Peace, Daisaku Ikeda talks about human revolution in terms of self-mastery. Simply put, this means winning control over oneself, overcoming the small self that is dominated by narrow self-interest and awakening to the larger self that works for the good of all humanity. From this standpoint a major obstacle to developing ourselves is to pursue a way of life bound by our small ego or self. Expanding from the lesser self to the greater self is the path of human revolution.

Through our practice of introducing others to Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, and through efforts to share Buddhism with others, we ourselves grow immensely, we can carry out our human revolution, and transform our karma. Therefore by guiding another individual towards happiness, we also guide ourselves towards happiness. The act of introducing others to Buddhism, which enables us to profoundly benefit both ourselves and others, is the formula of hope for humanity.

At a time when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood, or at a time when a person is at a turning point in doing their human revolution, the negative aspect of life will always appear in some form. This is an unavoidable fact of life! Nichiren Daishonin assures us of this and asks us to transmit it as an axiom or principle of faith so that it is understood by all those who practise.

Obstacles
This negative aspect is often referred to as the 'three obstacles and four devils' (in Japanese, sansho shima). Obstacles refer to things which appear to be outside of ourselves (but which ultimately have their origins in our lives) and the devils, or negative elements, are 'internal'. What makes these obstacles and devils serious is that if we are influenced by them we may stop practising Buddhism. They confront us at a specific point in time - usually when we are about to grow in our lives and move forward. The fact that at a difficult moment we may think that we should stop practising is a sign that it is an attack of one of the three obstacles and four devils. From a positive point of view these hindrances enable us to see a weakness in our lives so that we can chant and become stronger in that area.

The first is the obstacle of earthly desires. Buddhism teaches that our earthly desires may be transformed into enlightenment. Second is the obstacle of karma, which includes the influence of those who are close to us such as a spouse, partner or children. Third is the obstacle of retribution, which means opposition from those with power over us, such as our superiors, parents or people in authority.

The devils come from within our own lives. We create our own negativity, our own doubt, uncertainty and confusion. The first devil arises from our earthly desires. It can include egoism, craving for personal fame and riches, laziness or being dominated by force of habit. It can also arise from the three poisons of greed, anger and stupidity.

Second is the devil of weakness that can arise in our own bodies, such as an illness, which will hold us back and reduce our capacity. Third is the devil, which manifests as the hindrance of death. Unless we are confident that death is not 'the end', but rather another phase in the cycle of life and death - then another person's death can trigger a sense of doubt and can considerably weaken our will to practise Buddhism, even though Buddhism is intended to relieve us from the sufferings of birth and death.

Finally the fourth devil is known as the Devil King of the Sixth Heaven who, in Buddhist mythology, works to obstruct Buddhist practice and drain our life force. This is the manifestation of fundamental darkness inherent in life. And because of this can be seen as the most challenging aspect of negativity to conquer. When influential people persuade or threaten us to stop practising this could be said to be the workings of the Devil of the Sixth Heaven.

Whatever form they take, the Daishonin advises us to take these obstacles and devils as confirmation that we are properly practising the true Law through which ordinary people become Buddhas. They offer us insight into aspects of our human revolution, ways to strengthen our lives and assurance that we are on the verge of achieving this, so long as we are neither influenced nor frightened by them. Human revolution includes experiencing this process and transforming some aspect of ourselves. It indicates the real experience of finding we have to confront something. It also includes our need to gain the inner conviction that we can win over the obstacle in question.

In Buddhism, the term 'fundamental darkness' is used to describe the ignorance and delusion inherent in human life. This is the ignorance of the fact that we all have the state of Buddhahood in our lives, at all times, latent and ready to be revealed. The aim of our great struggle for kosen-rufu, our movement of human revolution, is to transform that innate darkness into light. Our goal is to vanquish the destructive tendencies within human life that give rise to mutual distrust and hate, violence and fear. The three obstacles and four devils become an indispensable means for doing this. That is why we should rejoice when they appear.

Sometimes it all gets too much!

World on your shoulders?
Sometimes it all gets too much.

Sometimes I think about how much there is to do. And I freak out a bit.

Work, life, family, jobs, receipts, bills, death and taxes!

Then I remember that I am a Buddha and there is nothing that I cant handle.

One step at a time.

One foot in front of the other.
